Overcoming Anxiety: Why Drama Isn't My Escape

Just a few nights ago, I had a fantastic catch-up with some friends. What I would call a perfect recipe for a relaxing evening - delicious dinner, the conversation flowed effortlessly, and laughter filled the air. It was perfect... until the topic shifted to the latest Netflix drama everyone's been buzzing about. Suddenly, a wave of descriptions about epic plot twists and character breakdowns crashed over us, and I felt like... well, like I'd been beamed onto a different planet!
Don't get me wrong, I love a good story. A captivating book or a well-made movie can have me hooked for hours. But as life gets busier and responsibilities pile up (not to mention my existing anxiety), drama series with their endless cliffhangers and emotional rollercoasters, just don't resonate with me. Here's why I choose a different path:
Anxiety on Fast Forward: Life throws enough curveballs as it is. Between work and commitments, I crave activities that leave me feeling calm and grounded. Drama series, with their high stakes and emotional manipulation, feel like they're cranking up the anxiety dial to eleven. Hard pass!
The Productivity Paradox: The "just one more episode" trap is a real productivity black hole, for me at least! I know the inevitable crash landing – feeling drained and emotionally fuzzy – which zaps my focus and ability to tackle my to-do list or leaves me yearning for a refreshed morning.
The Joy of Letting Go: Not having to worry about plot twists, cliffhangers, or remembering a gazillion character names is strangely liberating. It gives my brain a much-needed vacation and allows me to focus on what truly matters in my life.
Quality Connection, Not Just Watching: When I do have free time, I crave genuine connection with loved ones. Watching something together becomes a shared experience – a way to bond and create lasting memories – not just getting swept up in the drama.
Finding Peace in Simplicity: "Less is More" is my guiding principle in life. I believe in reducing activities and simplifying my life. The more I prioritise activities that nourish my well-being, the greater sense of inner peace I've discovered. It's not about devaluing things but rather about being deliberate with my time and energy. And for me, drama series simply don't align with that philosophy.
